Nopal Cactus (Prickly Pear) Contains Serine
(*) See References and Disclaimer at the bottom of the page.
Nopal cactus (prickly pear) contains serine, an amino acid that helps to metabolize fat in the body(1*). It is also used to support the immune system by producing antibodies and immunoglobulins(2*).
Serine also helps to control spikes in blood sugar after a meal by stimulating the synthesis of glucose(3*). This synthesis is specific to the liver but with the help of a few other compounds found within the body, serine helps to keep overall blood sugar levels stable(4*). This amino acid also plays a role in the construction of new muscle fibers. Important to bodybuilders, serine is used in creating dense muscle tissue(5*). Serine is also used as a moisturizer in cosmetics(6*).
