(*) See References and Disclaimer at the bottom of the page.
Nopal cactus (prickly pear) contains phenylalanine which is used in the synthesis of several neurotransmitters. It is also interesting to note that the amino acid tyrosine, considered non-essential, is manufactured within the body using phenylalanine, an essential amino acid(1*). Phenylalanine has been linked to improvement in cases of depression(2*). This amino acid plays an essential role in cognitive processes and may help to enhance alertness, memory, and overall cognitive function(3*).
Warning: If you have been diagnosed with PKU (Phenylketonuria) check your intake of Phenylalanine.
